Fable Legends Director: ‘I Don’t Know’ if Game Will be Always Online

September 9, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Online requirement could be used to track down cheaters.

Fable Legends, a four player co-op focused game announced at gamescom last month, may or may not require an internet connection at all times – the game's director, David Eckelberry, doesn't know or rather, Lionhead hasn't decided.

While "you can enjoy all of the game's content in a single player experience" it's currently unclear whether you'll be able to do so while playing offline.

"I don't know the answer to that," Eckelberry admitted in a gamescom interview with Official Xbox Magazine.

"The fact that we want to do a lot of things, a lot of systems on a servers, characters on a server…If it's online we can monitor you and make sure you don't edit your character file, or do something nasty there.

"Because if you're playing single player, all your accomplishments in the game are going to eventually matter if you're playing against a villain player, or alongside other heroes.

It's worth noting that the Xbox One originally required a daily internet check and so Fable Legends was developed with that requirement in mind – now that Microsoft has scrapped the online check it seems the situation at Lionhead may have changed.

Regardless, Eckelberry says an online requirement could help tackle cheating in the game.

"If you've somehow cheated your way to victory – that's a concern for us.

"If you're somehow cheating, online is a way for us to track it, because your performance can be measured in the Xbox Live cloud."

Fable Legends is set to be released in 2014, exclusively for Xbox One. A beta will be released sometime next year.
