One aspect Metal Gear Solid 5 that may be getting obscured in the conversation character depiction is how impressive the motion capture being used for the game is. This is running off of Kojima’s Fox Engine, now optimized for next-generation console.
Konami shared a short video showing Dutch model Stephanie Joosten coming into the Kojima offices to do facial and bodily motion capture for the now famous Metal Gear Solid 5 character Quiet. The video starts with her coming in and being given instructions, and then shows her surrounded by a barrage of cameras. As she is given instructions for expressions, minute details are recorded in photos taken from all angles.
After the barrage of photos, we are treated to a visualization of Joosten’s face in 3D that bears a very close resemblance, and is obviously used as the basis for Quiet.
It also appears like Joosten also did the motion capture for Quiet, and so we see a few brief cuts of her handling a rifle and switching positions like a real sharpshooter.
Of course, this motion capture technology is not unique to Metal Gear Solid 5. Quantic Dream have demonstrated similar technology at work for The Dark Sorcerer, and their upcoming game Beyond: Two Souls. We have also made prior coverage of the Fox Engine’s power at work for the upcoming installment of Pro Evolution Soccer.
The very end of the video demonstrates something interesting, as the black markings surrounding Quiet’s eyes fade on her face, giving us a clear look at it. Could these be clues to Quiet’s abilities, or some previously unrevealed tech? Expect Kojima to keep us guessing until the last minute.
