Rumor: Sony Working on Oculus-Like PS4 Headset

September 3, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Virtual reality device to be announced next year claims report.

Update: CVG claims that Sony is to announce its virtual reality device at the Tokyo Game Show later this month.

According to the site, Sony's VR headset appears similar to the 3D visor shown above and will be sold separately in a bid to keep the base cost of the PS4 ($399) down.

Original Story: Eurogamer reports that Sony is working on a virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4 which will be similar to the Oculus Rift and will reveal the technology at some point in 2014.

The site claims that, "Multiple sources have indicated to Eurogamer that Sony's VR headset will work similarly to Oculus'. Internally, the device has been demonstrated with Evolution Studios' PS4 racer DriveClub, with players able to look around the cockpit of a car."

Apparently, the device was set to be revealed at gamescom but was pulled. The availability of virtural reality gaming on PS4 could give Sony an edge as Microsoft has said its IllumiRoom projector is too expensive to bring to consumers.

Sony's Worldwide Studios' president Shuhei Yoshida refused to comment saying "We don't talk about that."

Oculus Rift dev kits have been sent to Sony and Yoshida said he "loves it". Oculus' Brendan Iribe has said that he would "love to be compatible with consoles" and that they have a "long term relationship" with Sony.

Iribe echoed these comments in a later interview saying that "We love what both the console guys are doing."

If the rumours are accurate it seems virtual reality will play at least some part in next-gen gaming and could go on to have the same type of impact that motion control had on current consoles.

The PS4 is set to be released this November.
