Platinum Games is almost done hyping up The Wonderful 101, at least for certain markets, as the game is set to release in Europe, Australia and Japan tomorrow and the day after. For this week, Platinum has shared story details for Wonder-Yellow, Wonder-White, Wonder-Back, and the CENTINELS support team.
Wonder-Yellow is the big man from Russia, and Platinum has seen it fit to make him shy and meek as a lamb. Defying stereotypes, Wonder-Yellow’s pumped up body and army background belies his gentleness and his genuine niceness. His Unite Hammer, or Peta-Peta Hammer, is made from Peta Omorium, the heaviest metal in the galaxy, and is large enough to double as a canopy, and of course doubles as an actual hammer.
Wonder-White is a ninja, who uses traditional weapons called Dantenmaru and Zanjimaru to create the Unite Claw. As you have probably guessed, he basically gets Wolverine powers: slashing enemies, climbing walls. He can also pry open cracked walls or closed entrances lacking keys. Wonder-White is serious about honoring his clan as a hero, but also a little preachy.
Wonder-Black is an 11-year old wonder kid, studying mechanical engineering research in the US, but actually based in New Delhi. (So yes, surprise surprise, Wonder-Black is actually South Asian.) He supposedly has a wide interest in science and technology, but specifically helps the team with his knowledge of hacking. His invention, the Time Bomb can actually slow down time, and he is handy to have around when there’s something that needs fixing. Similarly, his Unite Bomb slows time as it gets activated to explode. The Unite Bomb is difficult to use, and has to be used with other Unite Morphs to unlock its full potential.
Finally, we get a little more backstory on the CENTINELS support team aboard the Virgin Victory. The Victory’s captain, Laurence Nelson, was previously a Wonderful One himself, and is respected by even the most brash of all the heroes.
The Victory’s operator, Alice MacGregor, is a stoic, first-class pilot. People mistake her difficulty to express herself for coldness, but she can be relied upon when it comes down to the wire.
Professor James Shirogane is the game’s Doctor Light, and the guy who invented and mastered creation of the CENTINEL Suits. He also created the CENTINELS’ flying support mech, the P-Star, who helps relay data and analyze situations.
Platinum and Nintendo are building hype for The Wonderful 101’s US release in this coming PAX Prime. Do you think they've made a compelling case to buy the Wii U? You can reorient yourself with the game's heroes and premise with the seven minute director's edition trailer below.
