Grand Theft Auto 5 will be bigger. Grand Theft Auto 5 will be better. And according to Aaron Garbut, the art director at Rockstar North, every bit of the dense world you’ll be exploring is handcrafted. With love, of course.
Speaking to Buzz Feed, Garbut discussed anything and everything relating to the environment that he and his team have created for this September blockbuster. Although open-world games have lagged behind their competition in terms of visual fidelity in the past, GTA 5 is looking to close the gap with bigger detail and a better understanding of the current hardware.
“Every part of the world is handcrafted and really thought through. It all makes sense and has an internal logic,” Garbut said. “It feels more immersive and real because every part of it has had to stand up to multiple people questioning it. As soon as I play a game and the internal logic is blown, the experience is ruined for me. Even the basics: How do the people live their life? Where do they work, how do they get there, where do they eat their lunch, where do they grab a coffee, where do they go for fun?”
Rockstar is hoping to craft “a world that you can lose yourself in,” and if you take a look at the recent screenshots that advertise everything that can be done in the city, it’s easy to believe that the team has accomplished this goal. However, we won’t really know the degree of its success until GTA 5 hits the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Sept. 17.
