Nintendo Discontinues NES & SNES Classic Editions

December 14, 2018 by Dennis Patrick

Will we ever see a N64 Classic Edition?

The classic edition craze for retro consoles really kicked off with Nintendo after the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition. Everything from the promotion of the console, the system design and video games available were done in a way that replicated the era in which the NES first released. This was a huge hit and gamers quickly took to the stores in order to purchase a unit from the nostalgia factor, but that quickly ended up with units being sold and resellers flipping the consoles for a hefty price. Apparently, Nintendo was first surprised by the attention of the NES Classic Edition and started production back up for those who didn’t get a chance to purchase a unit during the first run.

Now that positive reception and response to the Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition caused Nintendo to go back and bring out another classic edition console in the form of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition. This time around production was large enough to avoid any resellers from flipping units for an outrageous price. With both units in stock and selling, gamers are likely looking towards Nintendo for their release of the Nintendo 64 Classic Edition.

Speculation of its announcement and the video games that would be included in the system has been rampant online. Unfortunately, there has yet to be any form of a Nintendo 64 Classic Edition announcement and Nintendo of America’s president, Reggie Fils-Aime, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter in which he alerted that the current systems are the extent of the classic program with Nintendo and that they are shutting down production which means once the stock runs out for these units then you will no longer be able to purchase an NES or SNES Classic Edition new in store.

Nintendo will likely make more of a push to provide NES and SNES video game titles on the Nintendo Switch platform but with so many gamers looking forward to a Nintendo 64 Classic Edition announcement, it wouldn’t be too shocking if Nintendo decided to make a surprise announcement sometime next year.
