According to the New York Times, Riot Games – the developers of League of Legends – and American Express will partner to produce League of Legends branded pre-paid debit cards.
The pre-paid debit cards will award League of Legends players with Riot Points for initial set-up and for each dollar spent afterwards. Riot Points allow players to purchase in game characters, items and cosmetics.
Upon signing up for the pre-paid card, League of Legends players will receive 1000 Riot Points. If cardholders load the card with $20, they will again receive another 1000 points. For the largest bump, if cardholders link their American Express League of Legends card to their direct deposit account, they will receive 10,000 points.
After the initial rewards, cardholders must make purchases with the card to continue receiving points. The first 10 purchases with the card will provide additional points, but after that cardholders, will accumulate Riot Points for every dollar spent using the American Express card.
Unlike credit cards, each card will not require a credit check or activation fee. To feel like an authentic League of Legends card, each debit card will also come printed with a character illustration from the game.
The New York Times states that the announcement will come this Wednesday.
