It didn’t take Microsoft long to pat the original Xbox on the back and send it packing once the bigger, better 360 came along. The support for the company’s first gaming console was cut short so that the spotlight could shine even bright on the next generation of hardware, but according to corporate VP of Microsoft Studios Phil Spencer, that won’t be the case when the Xbox One launches this November.
Speaking with OXM, Spencer eased the worries of the Xbox 360 fanbase by claiming that support for the current-gen console will continue long after the Xbox One hits retailers. How long will it really last, though?
"Years,” Spencer said. “Last generation was different for us, we moved pretty quickly. This time, you will see us staying committed to the Xbox 360. I think it's a great platform. In certain areas, like trying to switch apps quickly, it shows that it was built in a different era, but in terms of the price point, the content library – I don't have the stats, but I bet it's the largest content library ever created in the history of the game space.”
The Xbox 360 might have debuted all the way back in 2005, but that doesn’t mean now isn’t a good time to jump into the massive library the console offers.
“It's a great time even now to get into the Xbox 360 ecosystem. It's something we'll remain committed to on the content side as well as the platform itself," he continued.
