Square Enix: Next-gen Tomb Raider ‘Well Into Development’

August 1, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Lara’s heading to next-gen consoles.

In an open-letter from Phil Rogers, the CEO of Square Enix Europe and North America, it has been revealed that a Tomb Raider installment for next-generation platforms is "well into development."

The letter focuses mostly on the state of the company's finances and restructuring efforts but Rogers states: "I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel – something you may have heard about recently."

Rogers is likely referring to the news that an upcoming comic will tie directly into the next game in the series.

Gail Simone, the comic's writer, said "We start just a few weeks after the end of the game and this is all continuity, it will all be Tomb Raider canon, and lead directly into the sequel. This is what got me excited, we get to be part of Lara Croft history."

"Square Enix is in production with a number of next generation projects, including Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, which were announced at this year's E3, and Thief coming in 2014," Rogers wrote.

He did not provide details on when the Tomb Raider sequel will be released or for what platforms but presumably the sequel is headed for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The Tomb Raider reboot, released in March, sold 3.4 million copies but fell below Square Enix's expectations for the title, in light of which it's good to see the company investing in another entry in the series.
