The latest Star Wars: Battlefront game won’t simply build on past mechanics and fan expectations. For EA’s first attempt at the well-loved, action-packed franchise, DICE will be starting from scratch in order to reboot the series. We’ve seen little on this reboot other than a brief teaser at this year’s E3, but it will "most likely" release in summer 2015 to correspond with the new films, CFO Blake Jorgensen said today during EA's annual stockholder meeting.
We’ve seen quite a bit from the previously planned Battlefront 3, which was deep into development before receiving the axe. However, this new DICE-developed project is looking to start anew and take advantage of the massive hype that will surround the new movies waiting to be released in summer of 2015. That leaves plenty of development time for this next-generation project, which couldn’t be too far off the ground since EA only recently picked up the Star Wars license.
If Battlefront isn’t your thing, you can expect plenty more Star Wars titles to come from EA in the future. With Obsidian Entertainment admitting that Knights of the Old Republic 3 was in pre-production years ago, it’s possible that we might see another game in the popular RPG series down the road, too.
