Spider-Man was one of the biggest and most anticipated video game releases of this year and as a result, plenty of hype was surrounding its launch date. While hype can be a dangerous thing with a potential of setting expectations incredibly high for gamers, Spider-Man ended up releasing with fantastic reviews. Both critics and fans alike enjoyed the latest web-slinging take on the Spider-Man franchise where development studio Insomniac Games opted to deliver fans with a unique story.
When it comes to comic book based video games or films, we tend to see an origin story. In a recent interview between Polygon and Spider-Man’s lead writer, Jon Paquette, the developers spoke of his decision to deliver fans a more unique experience. Instead of going with an already told narrative journey, players instead received a story based around Peter Park in his twenties who has been Spider-Man for nearly a decade and has already gone through college.
As mentioned, fans thoroughly enjoyed the latest Spider-Man video game and while most gamers who picked up a copy of the game at launch have already completed the game, more content is coming out soon. We’ve already reported on the announcement of The City That Never Sleeps, a three-part DLC for Spider-Man. However, we now have some new information regarding the development studio’s decisions when crafting the DLC story.
Jon Paquette stated that the developers were looking to deliver fans a fun experience. Apparently, Insomniac Games have been taking notes of what fans enjoy most from the Spider-Man video game and felt that the DLC being centered around specific characters and fleshing them out in their own unique journey.
“We see how people are reacting to certain characters. We see what people enjoy as part of the main game and then we ask ourselves, ‘How do we give them more of that?’
“At the same time, how do we give them something that feels new and fresh? So our strategy with that is to focus on distinct characters.”
For instance, we know that the first upcoming DLC part to release is focusing on Black Cat where players will receive plenty of storytelling. Likewise, it may even focus on elements about the game that you might not have ever experienced yet unless you managed to gather a platinum trophy.
Currently, Spider-Man is available exclusively on the PlayStation 4 with The City That Never Sleeps DLC launching on October 23, 2018.
