Who's so loaded they already got themselves a 4K TV, and bought the recently released FMP-X1 4K media player? Even if you only have smaller resolution devices, say, HD, you may soon be benefitting from 4K, thanks to two new reveals from Sony.
First, Sony is planning to launch Videos Unlimited 4K, adding 4K content to their current Videos Unlimited service. Although 4KTVs have been around for a while now, there hasn't been any actual 4K content released for consumers yet. The FMP-X1 comes preloaded with 10 movies and will supposedly allow you to buy more titles online, but this new service will be a cheaper alternative storefront. Most 4K content so far consists of Sony's movies, although they also have a selection of short indie features.
The second reveal wasn't really publicly announced but is potentially more exciting, even if you have no intention of buying anything 4K related ever. Sony has made a change to their DRM policies to allow you to keep multiple copies of Sony content on multiple Sony devices. Whereas previous policies made you repurchase the same movie you had, for example, originally on your PS3, again on your Vita, now Sony will register each purchase as a universal purchase, so that all you would have to do is redownload said movie on your Vita.
Sony has kept this new change on the down low, perhaps while they still haven't figured out pricing policies to match these DRM policies. Does owning Taxi Driver on PS3 make you eligible for the same film on 4K? We'll update when Sony reveals more. What we do know is 4K content is going to be ridiculous large. The ten bundled movies in the FMP-X1 occupy a total 400 GB in the device on their own. Whether you can switch between or keep 4K and HD movies in your PS4 will be a question to be answered somewhere down the line as well.
