Naughty Dog's game has already broken PS3 records and become the fastest selling game on the console so far this year but in lieu of any other major releases recently The Last of Us continues to rest atop the UK game charts being in first place for the fifth consecutive week since launch.
The most notable new entry is Nintendo's Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. which debuted at number three behind Animal Crossing: New Leaf.
As a result of price cuts at various retailers Aliens: Colonial Marines has risen to number 10 from 22 last week. Civilization V: Brave New World just about got a place in the top 40 at number 39.
The complete top ten is, in order; The Last of Us (1), Animal Crossing: New Leaf (2), Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. (3), FIFA 13 (4), Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition (5), Far Cry 3 (6), Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (7), Assassin's Creed 3 (8), Tomb Raider (9), Aliens: Colonial Marines (10).
Not only has The Last of Us done well in the software charts but that game has also helped push the PlayStation 3 to the top of the hardware charts for June ahead of Xbox 360. Last month also marked the first time in several years that PS3 software outsold titles on all other platforms – again, principally due to The Last of Us.
PS3 software had a market share (by value) of 40 per cent according to GFK Chart Track.
While it was a good month for Sony Gamasutra notes in its hardware breakdown that the Xbox 360 has dominated in the UK for the first six months of the year. Last month, it was revealed that Microsoft's console has topped the Wii in the UK as the best-selling current generation console there.
