Speaking to GameSpot Ubisoft's senior vice president of marketing and sales Tony Key has said the critical and commercial success of Far Cry 3 has ensured a sequel will be developed.
"We're totally psyched from [Far Cry 3]. It's a great brand, and now it's got the recognition it deserves, so we're clearly going to make another one: more on that soon."
Far Cry 3 was released in November 2012 and has sold six million copies. Blood Dragon – a downloaded 80s themed spin-off – has also performed well.
Many of Ubisoft's upcoming titles are, like Far Cry 3, open world and Key says "I think open world can represent the future of gaming and that's where we're investing huge portions of our resources – because that is what consumers want.
"They don't want linear, they want open," he said with the caveat that "there's always going to be a place for linear experiences."
He said Ubisoft are particularly good at crafting large-scale, open world titles.
Far Cry 4 is rumoured to have an early 2014 release date. Even if it does not, it seems like the game will be headed to next-gen platforms and PC.
