It appears Game Freak has once again decided to take the route of turning inanimate objects into Pokemon. Normally, the company likes to use the various likenesses of different animals as the basis for their Pokemon, but once every blue moon we’ll see a Pokemon that doesn’t follow this trend. There have been Pokemon in the past based upon chandeliers and ice cream cones, so this latest one based upon a sword doesn’t surprise us. All of that said, the fan base surrounding Pokemon hasn't responded too kindly to these types of Pokemon, so it will be interesting to see how they respond. All of that said, Honedge is a sword, and who doesn't like swords?
The Pokemon will be making its debut in the upcoming X and Y iterations of the franchise. Its name is Honedge, and is rumored to contain an ancient soul. Given its type – Ghost/Steel – this would appear to be an accurate assumption. Honedge is also equipped with a scabbard, and when in battle, will unsheathe himself. Honedge will be able to learn a host of different moves, with one of the confirmed ones being “Swords Dance,” which increases the users Attack statistic upon use.
One interesting detail concerning Honedge can be found in its name. Pokemon previously introduced to the series, such as Vanillite and Magnetite have evolved into two of the same entities. It’s a reasonable guess that Honedge – due to having the word “one” in its name – might very well evolve into two or three “swords” upon evolution.
Pokemon X and Y releases later this year in October.
