Square Enix has just released new screenshots of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. These latest pictures show us more pictures of returning character Hope Estheim. The son of Norah and Bartholomew Estheim, Hope joined Lightning in the first game in the series to avenge his mother's death at 14. In Final Fantasy XIII-2, he is a 27 year-old academic who helps new lead characters Serah and Noel. Playable in the first two games, Hope comes back to assist Lightning as a guide.
For reasons still unexplained, Hope reverts back to his 14 year old appearance in the first game, although we saw him grow into a 27 year old in Final Fantasy XIII-2. Hope is actually 527 at this point and retains his memories of the first two games. The game has some time elements in the story, so we presume this is a deliberate choice to be explained later. Other elements in the story will apparently involve Lightning relationship with Hope as a mother figure, as she sees how Hope has matured through the years.
These new screens show Hope may remain for the game's duration in Lightning's home base. One screen shows Lightning can choose to talk to Hope or replenish her supplies. Earlier previews revealed that Hope would be helping Lightning via wireless communication.
Square Enix has promised Lightning Returns will tie up loose ends from the previous game and feature one definitive ending that won't be revised with later DLC.
