Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president Jim Ryan has revealed in a GameReactor TV interview that there is currently no time frame for the rolling out of Gaikai streaming services in the region adding that Sony plans to makes some PS4 announcements at gamescom in August.
Speaking to GameReactor TV Ryan commented on when European gamers could expect to see Gaikai services – which have been announced for 2014 in North America – saying:
"It's gonna be pretty much a phased approach, and it's gonna be phased in terms of geography and in terms of how we'll do it. We'll launch in North America in 2014. We are working to bring that service to other parts of the world, and most notably Europe, but you know, Europe is… just very fragmented. It makes it rather difficult to do stuff like introducing a cloud gaming service. So there's a lot of details to work through, and we are in the process of doing that, but we don't have a timeline for introduction outside North America."
Ryan went on to say Sony will begin by streaming PS3 games to PS3 and PS4 before working on the service with Vita as a client device. Speaking about the possibility of streaming PS4 games he commented "That's also on the roadmap, but we'll start with PS3."
He also noted that Sony have more announcements to make before the PS4 is released saying they'll be revealling new content at gamescom in August.
"There's a lot coming. I'm sure you heard from Shu (Yoshida – president of Sony Worldwide Studios) that he has 30 games in development. 20 of them are going to ship within the first year of the console's life, and of those 12 are new IP… there's a lot going on, we need to keep stuff back. We've got gamescom for us Europeans – we need to have something to show at gamescom, don't we?"
Held every year, gamescom had over 250,000 visitors last year making it the largest event in the game industry. Both Nintendo and Microsoft are set to return this year having bypassed the event in 2012.
Sony's gamescom press conference last year focused mostly on the Vita but with PS4 on the way the handheld may not get quite as much attention this time round.
