Oculus Rift ‘We Would Love to be Compatible’ With PS4 and Xbox One

June 13, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Sony has seen Oculus Rift demos and has dev kits for the system.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida recently praised the Oculus Rift in an Engadget interview; now, the virtual reality console's CEO has said "we would love it to be comaptible with consoles."

Brendan Iribe told DigitalSpy "We're big believers in consoles, we love what Sony is doing and what Microsoft is doing. There's no reason technically that it couldn't work on consoles, especially next-gen consoles; they have the CPU, GPU computing now to run really high quality content in HD at 60 frames per second.

"In stereo 3D, it's a little bit more [difficult] so you might have to turn it down a bit, but they are capable. So there's no reason technically it couldn't happen, it's just whether Sony thinks it's a good idea."

Yoshida revealed that Sony has Oculus Rift dev kits and said that he "loves it" however, so far, only Oculus Rift demos have been shown to Sony.

"We're game for the device to be on as many platforms, as many systems as possible," Iribe said adding that Oculus Rift has "long term relationships" with Sony.

Indeed, Iribe worked for streaming service Gaikai, which was purchased by Sony last year. Gaikai's services will be coming to PS4 beginning in the US in 2014.

"We've shown demos and spoken to those guys, but we really haven't taken the conversation any further than just showing them the demo and saying, 'We'd love it to be on your console. Let us know if you agree any time, we're happy to be there!'" Iribe added.

"Right now we're not spending much time talking with anybody else, but really solveing problems internally."

Speaking about the move to virtual reality he commented "Some are even wanting to make that leap of faith with us – which is exciting – we're expecting all of that would accelerate if a console announced compatobility."

EA has previously expressed an interest in developing for Oculus Rift.
