Apparently, crude humor and hyper violence never go out of style. Shadow Warrior, a classic 3D Realms project that built upon the Duke Nukem 3D engine, will be making a comeback later this year on hardware that won’t make every enemy look like it’s spouting strawberry jelly. Although the first game was heralded for introducing true room-over-room situations, transparent water, climbable ladders, and even assorted vehicles to drive, the debut trailer that’s just been released seems to simply want you to know that heads will be rolling by the end of this year.
Flying Wild Hog, the team behind PC FPS Hard Reset, will be working together with Devolver Digital to bring this “cult classic shooter” into the modern era. This PC and next-generation game may just look like your average violent romp through a litany of bloody corridors, but the emphasis on the katana will allow for a precision (and brutality) not often found in other games with this much shooting. The campaign follows protagonist Lo Wang as he tracks down a legendary sword known as the Nobitsura Kage, which his employer desires.
Things get a tad bit supernatural from there, as Wang soon discovers the blade's connection to ancient gods from a foreign land. You can try to keep up with this bizarre yarn as much as you’d like, but if you’re playing this game, you’re playing it to see the gruesome, bloody ways that enemies hit the dirt. Is that a good reason to pop a disc into a console? Many would argue that we’ve grown out of that style of game. If you’re interested, though, look for Shadow Warrior to launch on PC and next-gen consoles later this year.
