Remember Final Fantasy 7? OK, silly question. This JRPG that launched on the original PlayStation seemed to win over the hearts of every teenage player to lay hands on it. Although the graphics were blocky and some of the story was borderline ridiculous, the adventures of Cloud and company has become one of the most revered, fondly remembered pieces of gaming history. Fans have wanted a proper remake for years now, and while we won’t be getting a massive overhaul of the game with new, current-generation graphics, an HD re-release of Final Fantasy 7 has made its way to the PC in Japan.
Final Fantasy 7 International has just been released as a download in the Land of the Rising Sun, and as you’d guess, this is an HD version of the classic RPG. If you take a look at the images below, you'll notice that everything about this once rough, fuzzy world has been put into focus. The textures are smoother, there’s greater shading, and everything just feels a bit more modern than it was before. It’s not available on any console at this time, but due to the age of the game, it shouldn’t be too difficult to run on almost any PC.
When will you be able to enjoy this blast from the past? Well, if you’re not currently living in Japan, we don’t have a great answer for you. The download is being sold for 1,500 yen on the official Square Enix website. For the rest of us, enjoying what the modding community has done with the game might just be the best option.
