Ouya Launch Delayed Due to High Retail Demand

May 9, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

The Ouya will ship three weeks later than planned.

In an interview with Joystiq, Ouya's CEO Julie Uhrman has revealed that the Kickstarter-funded Android console will launch later than originally intended. While it was planned that players would be able to get their hands on the final product on June 4, the release date has now been pushed back to June 25, which – as Joystiq points out – is the Tuesday after E3. According to Uhrman, the delay is due to a higher retail demand than the team expected:

"We've had incredibly positive reactions from our retail partners, and so in order to meet their greater than expected demand, we decided to shift the launch date by a couple of weeks – three weeks – which will allow us to create more units and, basically, have more units on store shelves in June."

Those who didn't back the Kickstarter campaign that raised the funds needed to produce the Ouya console can now ensure that they'll get hold of their own console by preordering from various retailers in the US, UK, and Canada. If you buy the Ouya through the official website it'll cost you $99.99, with a cost of $49.99 for each additional controller, though presumably individual retailers will be able to set their own prices (especially in the UK, where you can probably expect the console to be more expensive than a straightforward currency conversion would dictate).

Those who've already seen the console and raised issues with its design will be pleased to know that the Ouya team has also adjusted the size of the controller buttons so that they no longer get stuck under the faceplate. A representative told Joystiq that the Ouya team will work with those who already have a defective controller “to resolve the issue via customer service”.
