God of War: Ascension is available for the PlayStation 3, but its developers at Sony Santa Monica believe that there's room to potentially bring the game to the PS4 because of what they're capable of doing with the system.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Ben Diamand, Graphics Engineer at Sony Santa Monica, expressed his understanding of the PS4 and of its capabilities.
"It’s definitely got its share of interesting challenges – filling up that much memory from disk takes some time," he said. "From a technical standpoint, the DDR5 part is perhaps more interesting to me. But the 8GB part makes me pretty happy, too, since I think it makes a powerful PR statement."
Asked whether he thought it possible to bring God of War 3 and God of War: Ascension to the platform, Diamand says that it's entirely doable.
"It could be done," he said. "The PS4 hardware is such a big leap forward in terms of graphics power compared to the PS3 that we probably wouldn’t need to go that far. Most if not all of the SPU techniques we developed and used on PS3 were there to reduce the RSX workload. With the PS4 GPU we probably wouldn’t need those techniques."
Despite confirming its possibility, he cautioned that he was unable to comment on whether God of War: Ascension or its predecessor would make their way to the next-gen platform.
Given the fact that Sony has ported both PSP God of War titles as well as the original God of War 1 & 2 to the PS3, there's a good chance that they'll be doing the same for Ascension and God of War 3. If there's demand for it, there's little reason to see why they wouldn't want to do that.
