‘Among the Sleep’ Toddler Horror Game to Support Oculus Rift

May 7, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

Experience a viewpoint you’ve probably forgotten.

Krillbite Studio has announced that Among the Sleep, the Kickstarter-funded horror game in which you play in first-person mode as a toddler, will support Oculus Rift. The team has provided a video that demonstrates what the developers have already achieved with the dev kit they've received, and while it's difficult to convey what it'll actually be like to play the game with one of these headsets on, it's clear those player trying it out are impressed.

The Oculus Rift does seem to be a good fit with a game like Among the Sleep. The unique selling point of this game is the biological and emotional immaturity of the protagonist, which changes the vantage point from both a physical and psychological point of view. The character's viewpoint is much closer to the floor than most of us are able to remember experiencing in real life, and the world looks huge and distorted. Enabling the player to experience this more closely through virtual reality seems like an obvious step.

While the game will definitely ship with at least “a basic implementation” of Oculus Rift, the folks at Krillbite want to go further with it and implement features like positional tracking, making it so that if the player tilts her head the protagonist will bend his body to the side and be able to lean around corners. Because that will require a little more time and money, the Kickstarter campaign will get a stretch goal of an extra $25,000 on top of its initial goal of $200,000. That initial goal hasn't actually yet been met, but the campaign still has eleven days to go so head down and make a pledge if you're interested.
