UPDATE: IGN has learned that The Sims 4 will allow for "single-player and offline play."
ORIGINIAL STORY: Electronic Arts has today announced The Sims 4 for PC and Mac with the title due to be released in 2014.
"Today we are revealing to our top fans the fact that The Sims 4 is coming to PC and Mac in 2014," the company declared via their website. "The Sims franchise is fueled by the passion and creativity of its millions of fans around the world. Their continued devotion to the franchise ignites the fire of creativity at The Sims Studio, driving them to continually improve and innovate on one of the world's most successful simulation game that has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide."
The game is set to be developed by Maxis which recently released SimCity, it has been suggested that The Sims 4 will require an always-online internet connection like SimCity which struggled to cope with high demand on its servers after launch. Hopefully if there is an internet requirement for The Sims 4 players will not meet similar issues.
Past Sims games have gone on to be released on console, the last core entry in the series, The Sims 3, was launched in 2009. Below you can see the first official image released for the game.
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
