The heads up display in Skyrim is among one of the least obtrusive user interfaces there is. Even so, it gets in the way of taking good screenshots, which players often do, and there are ways it could be improved.
To that end, there are a couple of mods designed to improve the way the game presents itself in its UI. My favorite mod among them is the Less Intrusive HUD by lavigne77, available for download on the Skyrim Nexus.
As you can see in the picture above, the mod changes quite a bit about the game's UI by overhauling the text completely. It also comes with a set of options which allow you to change the general settings, reposition the HUD, and toggle the visibility of all its options.
The mod also changes the fonts for books and allows you to tweak the way dialogue shows up.
A video of the HUD in action can be seen below. Be sure to watch it in full screen for the proper effect.
It's important to note that the mod will not be compatible with any other UI mods which alter the hudmenu.swf and hudmenu.gfx files. It should be compatible with SkyUI and a few others, however.
Speaking of which, SkyUI is definitely something you'll need to get, especially if you play the game with a mouse and keyboard. SkyUI is a complete overhaul of the game's inventory and spell management systems so you won't have to scroll through your selection arduously. Here's how it looks:
