Dead Island: Riptide Launches at the Top of the UK Charts

April 29, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

But the game doesn’t even sell half as many copies as its predecessor.

The UK video game charts are in, and new release Dead Island: Riptide has taken the top spot despite the fact that reviewers seem to generally agree that it's of mediocre quality. It's not all good news for Deep Silver and Koch Media, however, as the game has made it to number one with fewer than half the sales its predecessor, which also launched at number one in the UK charts, managed in its first week. According to UKIE, 71% of the sales of Dead Island: Riptide in its first week were for Xbox 360 copies, which – UKIE points out – “includes the special Zombie Bait Edition”. In case you'd forgotten, that's the one that comes with a figurine of a headless, armless woman's torso in a bikini.

Moving on from Riptide, second place in the charts goes to Injustice: Gods Among Us, which was number one last week. At number three is Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, an expansion only available on disc that includes a bulked-up version of the original game, which also debuted at number three when it launched back in 2012. Fourth place goes to another new release, Star Trek. UKIE tells us this has the third-highest week one sales of any Star Trek game; it'll be interesting to see if those sales go up when the film launches in a few weeks' time.

The final new release in the top ten is Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins, the 3DS prequel to the Wii U game Lego City Undercover, which is at number eight. Aside from that, we have Tomb Raider down at number five, BioShock Infinite down at six, FIFA 13 at seven, and Defiance and Luigi's Mansion 2 taking nine and ten.

Does Riptide deserve the positive association that comes from a top position in the charts?
