InXile Entertainment has a lengthy update on the progress of its Kickstarter-funded game Torment: Tides of Numenera. While the Kickstarter campaign proved ridiculously popular, hitting its $900,000 goal within hours of its launch and ending with a whopping $4,188,927 pledged through the site, inXile has kept the fundraising going through PayPal. To encourage further pledges, inXile has implemented a stretch goal at $4.5 million. If that goal is hit – and according to the update that'll happen if backers pledge a mere $94,000 more in the next week – then Torment will include the option for the player character to have a stronghold.
So what's a stronghold? InXile takes three paragraphs to explain, but it's basically a location that the player character will own, a playable area with quests and challenges and possibly extra storage space. It won't, however, be “a cozy home”, because this game is set in the (presumably non-cozy) Ninth World Numenera. Instead, it could apparently be an airship or a dimensional pocket, whatever that is.
If you want to know more about the Ninth World of Numenera, lead editor Shanna Germain talks about it in a video included in the update. While she talks, a guy comes up behind her and draws a map on a whiteboard, so you can see how the world is laid out.
Torment: Tides of Numenera is due to launch for PC, Mac, and Linux by the end of next year. Did you ever play Planescape: Torment? Will you play this spiritual successor?
