Nintendo Direct: Super Smash Bros. Officially Coming to Switch

March 8, 2018 by Katrina Filippidis

Miracles do happen.

After hints and tentative nods, today’s Nintendo Direct revealed that Super Smash Bros. is indeed arriving on Nintendo Switch. Nintendo waited until the tail end of the presentation to make the announcement. It was extraordinarily brief — Inkling girl stares in awe at a burning ring, and sees Mario and Link for a few seconds each before the camera zooms out again — but it managed to deliver one essential bit of information: Super Smash Bros. will be releasing this year.

If you look closely, you’ll notice what looks like 12 or 13 characters standing in the bottom of the ring. One of them definitely resembles Bowser. The remainder of the cast will likely consist of franchise staples, but there’s always a chance new downloadable characters like Fire Emblem Fates’ Corrin will be made available. Who would you like to see most?

The Super Smash Bros. series made its debut in 1999 for Nintendo 64. Over the years, new iterations like Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl have entered the fighting scene, contributing to what is now a thriving eSports division.
