Last Saturday (April 20) was the Canadian Videogame Awards, a ceremony put on in partnership with Fan Expo Vancouver that celebrates games developed in Canada, the third largest developer in the world. The show will be broadcast across Canada this weekend on Citytv and G4, but the winners are up on the website already.
Far Cry 3 (developed by Ubisoft Montreal) won Game of the Year, seeing off stiff competition from Mass Effect 3, Assassin's Creed 3, Mark of the Ninja, and Papo and Yo. Far Cry 3 also won awards for Best Animation (beating Mark of the Ninja, Prototype 2, Shank 2, and Sleeping Dogs) and Best Visual Arts (against Assassin's Creed III, Incredipede, Mark of the Ninja, and Mass Effect 3), and the crazy Vaas won it an award for Best New Character.
However, Mass Effect 3 (BioWare) won Best Console Game, even though Far Cry 3 was also in that category, along with Assassin's Creed III, FIFA 13, and Sleeping Dogs. More surprisingly, Mass Effect 3 also took the award for Best Writing (beating Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed III, Mark of the Ninja, and Sleeping Dogs) despite its controversial ending. A more obvious win went to Mass Effect 3 for Best Original Music, with “Leaving Earth” beating out music from Assassin's Creed III, Papo & Yo, Sleeping Dogs, and even Sound Shapes.
Check out the rest of the winners on the Canadian Videogame Awards site. Do any surprise you?
