The yet-to-be-named PlayStation 4 game in development at Quantic Dream has been in the works since the middle of last year, confirmed the company’s vice president. Pre-production work has been taking place parallel to the development of the studio’s PlayStation 3 product, Beyond: Two Souls.
Vice president Guillaume de Fondaumière, who’s been a part of creative titles like Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain, was recently interviewed by Eurogamer at the Digital Dragons event in Poland. With Beyond just around the corner, de Fondaumière talked a bit about the future works of the company, which may have started earlier than you think. Quantic Dream was one of the first studios in the world to receive a PlayStation 4 development kit, so next-generation work has been taking place for about a year.
"We received PS4 development kits – at the beginning it's specs then it becomes early kits – very early on," he said. "We were among the first studios in the world to receive those kits.
"Technology has been going on for quite a while now," he continued. "We've started to work on the pre-production of that new game since the middle of last year."
Studio founder David Cage was present at the unveiling of the PlayStation 4, showing just what can be down with the graphical horse power of the next-gen platform. However, Cage’s appearance at the event doesn’t mean that we’ll be seeing the team’s next game any time soon. de Fondaumière is still unsure when full production will commence.
"That's too early for me to tell. It's a very ambitious project, so it's going to start when it's ready," he said. "For us, a new console is another reason to try and innovate. What is certain is that whatever we're working on on PS4 is not going to resemble what we're doing on PS3… We're going to try and reinvent ourselves."
For now, all we know is that there is a PlayStation 4 game on the way and we’ll apparently be amazed by it. Let’s just take life one step at a time and look forward to the release of the PlayStation 3's Beyond: Two Souls Oct. 8.
