Sony plan to air the first PlayStation 4 TV commerical during next month'sChampions League Final on May 25th PS4 Daily reports.
UEFA and Sony recently signed a deal to extend the PlayStation maker's sponsorship of Europe's top club soccer tournament until 2015, reportedly for $40 million.
Sony have advertised at the Champions League since the PS One days in the late 1990s and ran commercials for the PS4's unveiling on pitch-side billboards in the run up to the PlayStation 2013 event where the console was announced. It's unclear whether the PS4 commericals will simply come in the form of 'Sponsored by PlayStation' or if Sony have booked a full blown 30 or 60 second slot.
The PS4 reportedly has a US marketing budget of $100 million and it's likely Europe will see similar spending, SCEE spent $135 million in the region purely on adversting the PS3 Slim. The Champions League final is one of Europe's most highly watched events each year and it seems like a perfect opportunity for Sony to showcase the console to casual gamers.
Whether or not Sony will show us what the console actually looks like during their Champions League spot remains to be seen. It's likely they'll reveal that information at a special event, possibly their E3 media briefing in June.
This year's final will be contested by the winners of the upcoming Barcelona vs Bayern Munich and Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund matches and will be held at Wembley Stadium in London and aired on ITV in the UK.
Previously Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Medal of Honor and Prototype 2 have been showcased during the final.
