Rumor: Xbox 720 Will Not Need Always-On Internet To Play Games

April 11, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

Plus it can even play used games too!

As we get closer to Microsoft's next generation system, we're hearing more and more of what it might possibly be. Thus far, it would seem that most people's worst fears are being realized, and that it might require an always-on internet connection.

But according to Develop, it might not be as bad as everyone has feared. Yes, the Xbox 720 will have always-online functionality, but it won't be required to play games.

If you want to play local games, which have no need for being online, you won't have to have to be. Unlike some recent examples of relatively singe player experiences that have been completely crippled by such requirements. Obviously we're talking about the recent SimCity reboot.

Furthermore, it is also reported that the Xbox 720 will be able to play used games as well, which has been a major concern among many potential players.

It was explained that the assumption might all be due to a misunderstanding; a brand new, smaller Xbox is being prepped to take on the Apple TV, one that would support Xbox Live titles as well as full Xbox 360 games. This new machine will apparently require the always-on requirement to play games and won't be able to play second-hand games (since it will not have a disc drive and is purely a download only machine).

The due date of the Xbox Mini is unclear, but it should be on the economical side, priced at just $149 or less. So, perhaps everyone can relax? Hopefully.
