StarCraft: Ghost Is Still Being Worked On

April 9, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

It was actually never cancelled to begin with.

Remember StarCraft: Ghost, the third person shooter with a heavy dose of stealth, which was intended to give everyone a up close and personal look at the StarCraft universe?

It was announced way back in 2002 (yes, over twelves years ago) and after back and forth between studios for a little while, until Blizzard Entertainment announced that the game's development was on hold in 2006.

Years passed and everyone assumed that it was cancelled. Well, turns out, we were all wrong. According to Official PlayStation Magazine in the UK, the game is still alive. Somewhat. When asked if it was still an active project, Blizzard’s Matthew Burger replied with:

"It’s on hold. It has never been cancelled."

And when asked if it might still be released someday, Burger responded with:

"Maybe."

Could a game with such a trouble production cycle that has been on ice for nearly a decade afterward still become a real game? Absolutely, this has happened at least once already.

Thought the most recent example that comes to mind is Duke Nukem Forever, and that game was (sadly or not surprisingly, depending on whom you speak with) not worth the wait.

Still, this is good news for everyone who was really, REALLY looking forward to the game, well over ten years ago, and has still been obsessing over the few screenshots to this very day.

Re-igniting development at this point might be a very wise move for the studio. While not universally hated like EA, Blizzard has definitely lost a bit of its luster in recent years.

World of Warcaft is hardly the hot thing anymore, and the bing Diablo 3 reveal for the PlayStation 4 was met with yawns. Point being, Blizzard is boring, and Ghost might be the key to generate some much needed interest and excitement.
