In an interview with CVG likely to raise a few eyebrows Epic's Mark Rein has said Fortnite "might be the best thing we've ever done."
Commenting that Epic didn't want to "ruin people's first impressions" of the cartoonish zombie survival game Rein explained that was why it had been excluded from Unreal Engine 4 presentations adding "Fortnite might be the best thing we've ever done.
"It's so good I pulled all Fortnite content from this engine demo three weeks ago," the executive said. "All of the Unreal demos we were going to do [at GDC] were all going to use Fortnite content. You saw in the tool demos – the rooms, the globes, the animations… that was created after I said, 'Fortnite is too good to ruin it this demo.' And by ruin I meant showing people a little, tiny bit of it – a little streak of world."
Epic are set to take their time with Fortnite with Rein commenting there will be "a very slow rollout" of teasers before allowing "a few hundred people" hands on time with the game.
"It's got such a long lifespan that we just don't want to rush it," Rein explains, adding "With your first impression of it, you need to understand what it is. So if you don't do that you sort of ruin people's first impression of it."
Fortnite was originally revealed at the VGAs in 2011 and it has been mentioned that an internet connection may be required for the title. Epic have also said they are aiming for a more casual audience with Fortnite.
The game is set for release exclusively on PC though a launch date is not yet known.
As part of the CVG interview Rein also spoke about the PS4 and how impressed he is with the system.
