Miiverse Finally Arrives On The PC and Smartphones This April

March 28, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

Is this one small step for Nintendo, and one giant leap for…. Nintendo?

The aforementioned Wii U system update, which aims to speed up loading times, isn't the only thing that's arriving this April.

At the Game Developers Conference, Nintendo announced that the Miiverse will finally making the jump to the PC and smartphones that same month, according to Destructoid.

UPDATE: Other sources, including Polygon, notes that its actual due for arrival in May. So perhaps it’s safest to say “later this spring”?

Apparently, players will need to log into the service via their Nintendo user ID. Functionality-wise, one can view threads, make doodles, and post comments. On the desktop side of things, Miiverse will be accessible via any web browser. Whereas on the mobile handsets, there will be an app.

No specific operating systems have been identified as of yet. It's a given that there will be a Miiverse iOS app, as well as one for Android. But what about Windows Phone?  Well, given that it's Microsoft's platform, that's a real long shot. But anything is possible.

Though it still seems far more likely than an app for the Blackberry 10 platform. So owners of the Z10 might not want to hold their breath. Also, it’s safe bet that said apps will be free.

We all knew it was coming, and even today, it's still hard to believe that Nintendo is leaving the confines that they create themselves, even if it's not a game. And while we're still light years away from the next Zelda premiering on the PlayStation 9, Nintendo designed software network arriving on other (and to a certain extent competing) hardware is significant nonetheless.

Miiverse will also be arriving on the 3DS, but at a later date.
