BioWare didn't have a lot to say about their plans with Mass Effect at PAX East, although they did manage to confirm that a new Mass Effect title is in development at their Montreal studio. At their panel yesterday in Boston, the company said that Mass Effect 3 was the end of Shepard's story, but that the universe had a lot more to offer, which they plan to expand upon in the upcoming game.
"We are starting to get ready to develop another Mass Effect game, and it's going to be a new thing," said series executive producer Casey Hudson. "We want to be able to give fans an opportunity to get back into the world with these things you've come to know and love about the Mass Effect experience but start something fresh and new—a new way for you to explore the whole universe in Mass Effect."
Unlike the upcoming title, the original Mass Effect trilogy was developed at their main headquarters in Edmonton, along with the Dragon Age series of games.
As for what the original makers of Mass Effect are up to, their next game will be set in a completely new universe and have nothing to do with any of their existing franchises.
"We are developing a whole new fictional universe at BioWare for myself and Preston [and other main Mass Effect trilogy creators.] That's kind of our next thing," said Casey Hudson. "We're focusing on building something new the way we did at the very beginning on Mass Effect.
It's unknown what they're working on, but given their penchant for science fiction, we wouldn't put it past them to be working on a game that isn't a traditional fantasy game.
