Nvidia Doesn’t Think the ‘Playstation 4’ is Impressive

March 17, 2013 by Jacob Saylor

Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of content, has something to say on the next generation of consoles.

When the Playstation 4 was announced last month, many were astounded by the system’s specifications and possible technical capabilities. A slew of technology demos and gameplay footage followed the announcement, all portraying a powerful new generation of consoles.

However, Nvidia’s senior vice president of content Tony Tamasi is not impressed: "Compared to gaming PCs, the PS4 specs are in the neighborhood of a low-end CPU, and a low- to mid-range GPU side.”

"If the PS4 ships in December as Sony indicated, it will only offer about half the performance of a GTX680 GPU which launched in March 2012, more than a year and a half ago."

This wouldn’t be surprising if Tamasi were talking about this generation of consoles – the Playstation 3, Xbox360 and Wii. It’s been a common topic of discussion between PC fans and console users alike ever since the two were compared side by side. All that said, no one doubts the longevity and flexibility of PCs when put in the veritable arena with consoles.

In any case, Tamasi is talking about the next generation. He’s talking about a cycle of consoles that he believes will be outdated by the time they are released.

Regarding the business side of things, apparently there was some discrepancy early on as to whose hardware we would actually see used in the Playstation 4. As for the current and most likely final game plan, we’re to see AMD handle the PS4’s visual area.

Tamasi says "I'm sure there was a negotiation that went on and we came to the conclusion that we didn't want to do the business at the price those guys were willing to pay."

Comments like this are generally a commonplace amongst industry gossip. What makes Tamasi’s notes so worrisome are that there isn’t a reason to down the PS4 apart from angst among failed negotiations in the face of AMD, who is another major competitor in the graphics chip realm. The victories nor the failures of the PS4 will affect Nvidia in any major way, so perhaps Tamasi’s comments should be taken seriously by Sony.
