Techland’s series of western based-shooters took a weird exit that briefly landed them into a crime drama in a current day setting. The publisher Ubisoft have decided to pull a U-turn and go back the route they were on to start with in Call of Juarez Gunslinger. I’m making jokes about driving when I could be making Old West puns. That’d be a gold rush. Driving jokes are dead wood.
The game will be released as a download for PC, Xbox Live and Playstation Network.
Today's trailer doesn’t show off any gameplay, but uses narration from the game’s main character over landscape vistas to set the tone. It’s difficult to be certain exactly what the gameplay will be like within the finished game, but we’re able to assume that it’s controlled from a 3rd person perspective and will involve the pursuit of outlaws. You’ll likely shoot a lot of people, but as it’s a video game being released in the year two thousand and thirteen that largely goes without saying.
According to the press release you play as Silas Greaves, a bounty hunter who has previously been chasing wanted criminals all over the west. The story will blend historical fact and the game’s own fiction to create something i like to call “historifiction”.
Notable historical characters will feature like Pat Garrett, Jesse James and Butch Cassidy. Reportedly the game will attempt to humanise these near-mythical figures.
Next week Ubisoft will be putting out a trailer that is more indicative of gameplay.
