Former thatgamecompany Creative Director Opens New Studio: Giant Squid

March 3, 2013 by Jacob Saylor

Matt Nava, former Creative Director at thatgamecompany, has created a brand new studio dedicated to “innovating and moving experiences.”

Giant Squid

Former Creative Director Matt Nava of thatgamecompany has opened a new studio going by the name of “Giant Squid.” The developer’s website went up not too long ago, and already features job openings, blog entries and contact information.

The job postings currently available are: Studio Manager, Lead Engineer, Gameplay Engineer and Tools and Gameplay Engineer. To be considered for any position you must be willing to relocate to the studio’s home in Santa Monica. The company is offering “competitive” salaries and benefits as well, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

The company has also created a Twitter feed, under which they’ve already begun publishing. Their bio states: “Giant Squid is a game development studio intent on creating innovative and moving experiences that inspire players.”

It will be very interesting to see what this thatgamecompany-originated force creates. With a solid foundation and the ability to offer strong incentives, we’re betting that Giant Squid is off to a quality start here in the games industry.

thatgamecompany is the entity behind names such as Journey and Flower, which have both received critically-acclaimed success alongside the Playstation 3 console. Journey actually beat the odds and made it onto the Game of the Year nominee list for Spike’s Video Game Awards in 2012.The game won in the Best Independent Game category, alongside stiff competition such as Fez and Dust: An Elysian Trail.

Not much else is known about the developer aside from the information herein, except that excitement is high. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any updates.
