Disney has revealed that a Cars playset will join those based on Monsters Inc., The Incredibles, and Pirates of the Caribbean in its upcoming game Disney Infinity. The announcement comes with a little trailer that highlights some of the characters and the setting that will make up this playset. Naturally, we'll get to play as Lightning McQueen, and from the huge lineup on display on the Disney Infinity website it looks like we also get Mater, Holley Shiftwell, and Francesco Bernoulli. The trailer shows us another car who “wants to wreck it all”, who doesn't appear to be a playable character may well be an antagonist in this part of the game.
The Cars playset will include missions for the player to work through in the small-town setting of Radiator Springs. Once players have completed those missions, they will unlock toys to use in the Toy Box mode of Disney Infinity. The addition of Cars-themed items and characters was a clever idea, since there was really no better way for Disney to get a racing component into the game. From the look of it, we'll be able to have other characters – like Captain Jack Sparrow, Elastigirl, Buzz Lightyear, and whoever else ends up as a playable character – racing these cars, so the comparison with LittleBigPlanet extends to include LittleBigPlanet Karting too.
Disney Infinity should launch in June this year, and parents of kids who liked Skylanders (or people who just liked Skylanders themselves) should probably start saving now.
