Gas Powered Games Acquired By Wargaming.net

February 14, 2013 by Ian Miles Cheong

The makers of Supreme Commander have been given a lease on life by Wargaming.net.

A few days ago, it looked like Gas Powered Games' existence was all but over with the failure of the studio to kickstart its MOBA-like game, Wildman, which the company and its founder Chris Taylor saw as a last resort for getting the studio back up on its feet.

The studio canceled the Kickstarter fund with just three days left on the clock and announced that it was using what little time it had left to focus on keeping the struggling company afloat.

"Your passion and hard work put us in a position to write this exciting new chapter in the history of GPG," wrote Chris Taylor on the Wildman Kickstarter page.

Today, we are happy to learn that Gas Powered Games has been acquired by Wargaming.net. Rather than closing shop, as many suspected they would, the studio that created Supreme Commander and Dungeon Siege now joins the ranks of Wargaming, a leading MMO developer and publisher.

The publisher's acquisition of Gas Powered Games includes the studio's contingent of game developers, including Chris Taylor. The publisher says that Gas Powered Games will "further bolster Wargaming's push into multiplatform expansion", which also includes the acquisition of Day 1 Studios and Big World Pty Ltd.

"Gas Powered Games' heritage and development pedigree shows us just how valuable an addition Chris and his company will make to the Wargaming family," said Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming. "Gas Powered Games has a long track record of providing incredibly engaging AAA gaming experiences and we can't wait to start working with them."

"Wargaming growth in recent years has been tremendous, and we're looking forward to joining one of the fastest growing gaming companies in the world," added Chris Taylor, CEO of Gas Powered Games. "I'm sure our experience and expertise will help us contribute even more to Wargaming's global success."

Wargaming employs over 1400 people across the globe, and is most well known for World of Tanks, which boasts 50 million players worldwide. The publisher also intends to publish World of Warplanes and World of Warships, both of which are scheduled for release in 2013.

It's unknown at this point what Gas Powered Games will be working on with Wargaming, but we can rest assured that the studio has finally found a good home.
