In what shouldn't be totally unexpected given the current trend for nostalgia and remakes of retro games, Sony has announced that it will be celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Superfrog HD (a game that is thus nearly as old as I am) by releasing Superfrog HD on PS3 and PS Vita. Here's what Debbie Bestwick, Managing Director at Team17, had to say:
“We’re extremely excited about bringing Superfrog HD to PS3 and PS Vita; it’s the most requested game that our fans are always requesting to see make a return. Now, with the 20th anniversary of the original Superfrog and the recent re-release of our classic survival-horror Alien Breed, we feel the timing has never been better.”
I hadn't actually heard of Superfrog, presumably because it was originally published in 1993 when I was still a toddler, but according to Wikipedia it's “a scrolling 2D platform game in the style of Sonic”, which doesn't sound so bad. Apparently, it lived in the shadow of the Worms games – for which Team17 is more generally known – but was actually very technically good. Sony has some quotes from various Amiga publications that praise things like its “great graphics, sound, playability and addiction”:
The One Amiga – 93% – “With Team17’s impeccable track record I was expecting Superfrog to be well above par but it’s far more than that – it’s breathtakingly good. Everything about the game, from the graphics and sound through the control to gameplay, has been honed and tweaked to gleaming perfection”
Do you remember Superfrog? Are you looking forward to his HD revival?
