Ex-BioWare’s Ray And Greg to Receive GDC Lifetime Achievement Award

February 11, 2013 by Mathew Jones

RPG making pair recognised for their efforts

The now mostly retired part-game developers part-doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk are being honoured at this year's GDC awards for their contributions to video games.

Though the pair moved on to different paths late last year, Ray now working in philanthropy and Greg drinking a lot of beer and talking about it on a website, as the co-founders of Bioware they've had a hand in not only creating some of the best games in history, but shaping the landscape of our medium in the attempt.

The Canadian Developer didn't begin as the massive success story they became. Bioware first began as a side project creating software for medical use as the pair studied to get their doctorate (that's where the "bio" comes from). After pooling together enough money to sustain their creative desires and move out of medical work, the pair began putting together the fantasy franchises we're all aware of today.

Since then they've gone on to massive global acclaim with a career spanning decades and ending in studios cropping up all over the globe. Titles in their back catalogue include Balder's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Knights of The Old Republic. As an institution, Bioware represented an unsurpassed level of RPG quality and The Doctor's fine leadership made this possible.

On March 27th during the Game Developer's Conference they'll attend the award ceremony hosted by Double Fine's Tim Schafer. Previous to this, Bioware has been awarded several times in 2004 for Knights of The Old Republic and this last year in 2012 they received recognition as producing Best New Online Game.
