1997 was a special year. Not only did it usher in classics like Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye 007 and Fallout, it also introduced a generation of kids to virtual pets known as Tamagotchi.
Twenty years later, Bandai America is reviving the Tamagotchi in a limited quantity run. Bandai Namco of Japan led the charge in April, releasing a miniaturised version of the original with six different colour designs. The American version will follow suit, and feature the quintessential nineties packaging.
Bandai America’s marketing director Tara Badie acknowledges the nostalgic value of the tamagotchi:
“For many Generation X kids, the Tamagotchi device can be considered America’s first and favorite digital pet…The enduring power of Tamagotchi is its clear expression that nurturing and love never goes out of style. It’s such an honor to bring back one of the most beloved toys in a way that captures the magic and joy of a generation while embracing the sensibilities of new generations.”
The 20th anniversary Tamagotchi will officially be available from November 5. Those interested can pre-order one today for $14.99 USD through select online retailers.
Before jumping in with the physical re-release, Bandai tested the waters with the Tamagotchi L.i.f.e Android app in 2013.
