Gabe Newell to Talk About Storytelling In Games at DICE Summit with Star Wars’ J.J. Abrams

January 28, 2013 by Alex Co

This year’s DICE Summit will have J.J. Abrams and Valve’s Gabe Newell as speakers concerning storytelling in games!

This year's D.I.C.E (Design, Innovate, Communicate and Entertain) Summit will have two notable personalities in different mediums on the stage at once to discuss storytelling in games.

If the headline wasn't obvious enough, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell will be joined by newly-appointed director for Star Wars J.J. Abrams in the keynote titled; "Storytelling Across Platforms: Who Benefits Most, the Audience or the Player?" which is set to kick off this year's DICE Summit '13.

In a prepared statement, Martin Rae, president of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences had this to say:

From TV to film and now award-winning mobile apps, there's no question that J.J. has his finger on the pulse of the entertainment industry, and we're thrilled to welcome him and our 2013 Hall of Fame inductee, Gabe Newell, to the D.I.C.E. stage…J.J. thoughtfully weaves together suspense, action, emotion, and fun into every one of his projects – elements every game developer aspires to capture as well. Each year, the D.I.C.E. Summit sets the tone for the year ahead in games and adding J.J. and Gabe's shared insights is a natural fit as we see all forms of entertainment converge.

The keynote, which will be held at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Casino Hotel at 9:30 a.m. on February 6, will be an informal chat between Newell and Abrams with no mderator to get in the way.

Also of note, this won't be Newell's only presentation at the event. The Valve CEO is also being inducted into the Hall of Fame and will even give a presentation of his own titled "A View on Next Steps," which will highlight on where the industry is heading, the advances Valve is making with Big Picture and Steam to prepare for the future.
