SEGA Issues Statement for Relic Entertainment Acquisition, Calls It a “Critical Step”

January 24, 2013 by Alex Co

SEGA has issued a statement in their recent acquisition of the Company of Heroes studio…

With news that THQ is no more, one of the biggest shake-ups in the videogame world has been SEGA's acquisition of Relic Entertainment. Not only did the the former hardware maker acquire the studio, but they also got the authority to publish games based on the Warhammer 40K Dawn of War and Company of Heroes games, too.

In a statement over on their official blog, SEGA of America president and CFO  John Cheng had this to say:

We are thrilled to have Relic Entertainment join the SEGA family. The acquisition is a strategic fit and a critical step in growing our business…They are a well-respected studio with a pedigree for making creative and innovative games and we look forward to seeing what great things we can create together over the coming years.

To date, the Warhammer 40K Dawn of War series has sold seven million copies worldwide, while the Company of Heroes franchise has sold more than four million units globally — which isn't bad for a real-time strategy (RTS) title.

SEGA also adds that they acquired Relic in order to "further reinforce PC game development capabilities in the U.S. and European regions." Glad to hear they know where the studio's strength lies, I admit.

I guess a congrats are in order for both SEGA and Relic. Now, let's just hope THQ's other studios are faring just as well.
