You Don’t Get Club Nintendo Coins When Buying Wii Content On The Wii U

January 23, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

Nintendo again makes buying digital content needlessly confusing. What a shocker, huh?

It's a well known that fact that Nintendo's online initiatives are more than a little rough around the edges. The Wii U has shown the company making a number of steps forward, but a recent discovery by Joystiq demonstrates that things are still needlessly imperfect.

One perk of being a Club Nintendo members are the coins that is earned when purchasing digital content, like old NES, SNES, Genesis, etc titles for the Wii, via the Wii Shop Channel. These coins in turn can be used towards special, members-only goods that are genuinely awesome.

Problem is, if you try purchasing Virtual Consoles or WiiWare content through the Wii U's Wii Mode, coins are not earned. The reason? Because one is unable to link one's Club Nintendo account to the virtual Wii within the Wii U.

The only real solution is to make all purchases via the Wii, and then transfer everything over. But if you already sold you Wii, to purchase a Wii U, you're clearly out of luck. It goes without saying that this is beyond annoying. Yet at this point, most Nintendo users are used to such goofy technical hassles.
