Making its debut at MAGFest the other weekend was the eagerly anticipated Sonic The Hedgehog fan movie. Well, at least among fans of Sega's mascot. The effort clocks in a little less than 20 minutes and is being classified as a spec film.
Before diving in, it's worth noting that the party responsible is Blue Core Studios, which also helmed the acclaimed (and feature length) Mega Man fan movie from not too long ago. It's also chock full of cameos, mostly internet celebs; from the Brental Floss to the Angry Video Game Nerd.
Though the star of the show is Jaleel White, who was the voice of Sonic in the original cartoon series:
Well, it certainly feels like a spec film. While it's clear that a lot of time and effort (and a decent amount of money) was spent, the entire thing still feels rather disjointed and stiff. In fact, far too much so for such a long production.
Perhaps it's sufficient to drum up enough interest to help acquire the necessary resources to smooth out the rough edges and make it a real deal movie, like their Mega Man project At the very least, the guy playing Eggman does a fine job. They should definitely keep him.
One also has to wonder what hoops whoever had to jump through to get Jaleel White involved; he's not a Hollywood A-lister, but he's Hollywood nonetheless.
