The Nintendo 3DS had a somewhat shaky start in the early days, due to it not lighting the world on fire like the original DS did. Plus many wondered if any handheld would fare well in a post iOS world. Though recent sales figures cited by Destructoid paints a very positive picture of Nintendo's portable.
Last week, the 3DS was able to push 211,499 units, which adds up to a lifetime total of 8,799,378, over a span of two years. Now, compare that to the PlayStation 3's six year totals, which is 8,716,260. So yes, Nintendo has managed to outsell the PS3, and in one third the amount of time.
Now, the comparison is a bit unfair, and very much like apples and oranges. Though it's an impressive feat nonetheless, and something Nintendo loyalists should be proud off. Though on a greater scale, it does speak of how limp the console scene is on that end, which is hardly a secret, and this latest bit of evidence is simply something else to put on the pile.
There are many reasons why handheld gaming has always reigned supreme in Japan. For starters, it's a commuter-based society, and with so much time spent on a train, there's the need to keep one's self occupied.
Even to this day, the regular DS and even the PSP manages to rack impressive numbers. Though with all that in mind, why hasn't the Vita managed to make a splash, given that it's arguably the most impressive of all the portables on the market, at least in terms of pure power?
