Nintendo is (Still) Increasing Switch Production to Meet Consumer Demand

May 29, 2017 by Katrina Filippidis

Good news for the players, even better news for Nintendo.

According to sources connected to the Financial Times, Nintendo ain’t slowing down Nintendo Switch production any time soon. The sources state that Nintendo has increased its unit production to 18 million (up from 16 million reported by The Wall Street Journal) to avoid “customer tantrums” come holiday season. The rise in production targets Nintendo’s present fiscal year (which like a typical Japanese fiscal year, will end next April). While the figures aren’t set in stone, we do know that Nintendo is officially shipping 10 million consoles—still extremely high. So if Nintendo is boosting production further, it seems like a smart pre-emptive course of action, especially when you consider Nintendo Switch consoles are selling out within hours at places like GameStop.

As of April 2017, Nintendo has sold almost three million Nintendo Switch consoles, and about four million copies of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Like BOTW, the recently released Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also proving to be a chart-topper, bringing home nearly half a million copies upon launch in the U.S.
